Tight Jeans
Three black teenagers are becoming frustrated while waiting for their friend. A young white lad walks past wearing super tight jeans. The boys look on until one of them asks the pivotal question, "How can a man wear jeans that tight?" This sparks a hilarious debate about race and culture. (IMDB)
Destiny Ekaragha: “I think sometimes laughter is the best way to talk about serious issues, because it stays in your head longer. Dramas are great and I’d like to do one, but at the moment I’m loving laughter.”
Although incredibly difficult, I do believe humour can be effective in tackling tragic issues. Of course, on a whole it depends on the topic, but I do believe that the humorous approach taken in "Tight Jeans"to serious issues such as slavery and racial fetishisation, is very effective. The passivity and light-heartedness of comedy can feel less aggressive and confrontational toward the viewer, allowing these topics, which would normally seem so bleak, to be accessible and understood to a greater extent. On the other hand, with a topic as incredibly emotive and hurtful as slavery, it can be hard to bring light to tragedies through humour without causing offense. I feel that in some cases, the only appropriate way to comment on such a thing is through taking a more realistic and raw approach, showing it for how it is and ditching the humour.
