Score

Music will play a huge role in my film as I believe it determines the mood of the scene and is central to much of its emotional. Music will be important in amplifying tension particular in the early opening sequence, but will transition into something more dream-like and melancholic in the final act (Forest sequence) in order to reflect his nearing towards death and acceptance.

Stabbing

The Alien

2:44 - 3:14

I like the ominousness and suspense that this extract from Alex Garland's "Annihilation" creates. The suspenseful swooping effect at the climax of the extract builds so much tension. This feeling is definitely something I want to recreate in this scene, for when the knife is revealed and eventually used.

I want to layer sounds on top of each other, gradually building the tension to a climax when Travis is stabbed:

High pitched synths playing over a low drone, getting louder and louder.

Journey Home

Version 1:

  1. Shida Shahabi - Sea Ear

I want this journey home to feel peaceful, sombre, melancholic, but with an eerie touch; like the quiet before the storm - this track does exactly that and will be very influential on my soundtrack. I similar want to use a low cello to create the same dronal, mournful quality which this track exhibits. I also like that the creaks of instruments and background noises can be heard in this recording - it feels much more raw and emotionally intimate.

  1. Prolog - Shida Shahabi

I think this track, like the last, creates a wonderfully mournful yet peaceful atmosphere. There is also dreaminess to it which, in relation to my film, taps into the sense that what we’re seeing is not actually real, but rather the internally fabricated world of Travis

This track will definitely be helpful in the production of my soundtrack.

Version 2: on the other hand, this sequence could be played out without any diegetic sound - just have diegtic sounds of traffic, beeping horns, shoes on pavement, general urban bustle.. - there needs to be an element of normality to this sequence.

General eeriness, tension

Very low cello music with binaural effect, peaceful and mourning

This low violin, drone would be a great way to increase tension during the build up to the phone call.

Moment of Realisation

His reality begins to dissolve

The film is essentially building up to this moment, so I need it to be raised from the rest of the film, in its emotion and intensity. The soundtrack will have a central role in this.

Operatic

Cloud Atlas Trailer Music - M83 'Outro'

0:00 - 1:00

The loud and heavenly synths makes make this song feel very liberating. I want to replicate this feeling, as though all the emotion built up over the course of the film, has suddenly been released.
